Pipe bender and tube bender rely on the exact positioning of the tube weld seam prior to the tube bending process for the production of repeatable geometries of the bended tubes. Repeated the geometries in automotive components are a must for automated production in the assembly shop but also for producing hydroforming components such as engine cradles, exhaust manifolds, side members or roll bars. Other processes that require precise positioning of the tube seam can be tube end forming, tube cutting, tube piercing, tube notching and tube punching.
Other applications are the detection and elimination of welds after coil joining in decoilers, blanking presses, or cut-to-length lines thus enabling the use of lower cost welded coils. A related application is the detection of weld seams in wires and rods and cable connections in the extrusion process.
A special application of weld seam location is the positioning of 55 gallon drums or similar containers for silk screen printing purposes.
